Total Knee replacement is considered when arthritis is in its advanced stages. This will manifest itself as persistent pain, limited function or significant bone loss. Surgery is reserved for those conditions that no longer respond to conservative care.
As with the hip, there are many surgical options. Dr. Gilbert uses minimally invasive techniques when possible. He also uses titanium and cobalt chrome implants with highly cross linked high molecular weight polyethylene inserts. He does both posterior cruciate retaining and substituting procedures.
As with the hip, computer navigation is used for all knee replacements and state of the art peripheral nerve blocks are used for pain control. This helps to ensure accurate placement of the components, improved overall experience and longevity of the replacement.
We are also using the gender specific implants for better overall fit and comfort.
